Wood ducks are one of two species of waterfowl that nests in this area. The refuge supplies great natural nesting habitat, including many wood duck boxes for these birds. This species is hard to do a population count through traditional aerial methods, so a banding program was started on the refuge more than 30 years ago that has become one of the largest wood duck banding stations in the country banding over 25,000 birds!
