Turning a Finial Between Centres No video for the next few days, so not a tutorial but here’s one for you to enjoy! With voice over. I was recently asked how I would turn a finial without using a chuck. The answer: turn it between centres, starting with the thicker end first. You can mount it either way round in the lathe. Anyone without a chuck wanting to turn a box finial don’t worry do it between centers, turn the thicker end first instead of the thin end if doing it in a 4jaw chuck. Sand before cutting the tip as small as possible and only the tiniest amount of clean up if any will be needed. #woodturning #finials #woodturnersofinstagram. Posting now as tomorrow I will be unavailable due to workload. I know you like the finials and love to see skew work. This was an Oak finial from a few weeks back. I was given licence to turn whatever I felt but needed to be 35mm max dia natural Oak with wax oil finish. This makes turning easy as I can just do what comes into my head as I go. Oak is not as good to turn as closed grain wood for finials but worth the extra effort. It’s speeded around x3 so had to do a voice over instead of comment

An unusual finial on this mornings newels. I often get asked why do you still turn by hand when there is CNC and copy lathes. Well I love hand woodturning and while you can’t compete on speed with automatic lathes IMO it gives a far better crisp job by hand.
