I heard the distinctive screech of the Red-tailed Hawks before I saw them on the mountain this morning. They were celebrating a breakfast on the mountain peak. I loved watching the smaller male use his tail as he held over his mate. The Red-tailed hawk is capable of “kiting,” holding still against the wind on set wings, much like a kite tugging against string. Sound UP!! This Red Morph Eastern Screech Owl is vocalizing his distaste regarding the noise his Red tailed hawk neighbor was making. This little owl species will often take advantage of uncapped chimneys to enter the stacks and sometimes they end up in the fireplace!! Please, if you chimney is not capped, before you light a fire as the season shifts, make sure no critters are inside. This owl was lucky to have been heard and then rescued.
