Nampeyo (1859 1942) was a HopiTewa potter who lived on the Hopi Reservation in Arizona. Her Tewa name was also spelled Numpayu, meaning snake that does not bite. She used ancient techniques for making and firing pottery and used designs from Old Hopi pottery and sherds found at 15thcentury

While 1890s traders wanted cheap Native souvenirs, Hopi potter Nampeyo studied ancient pottery fragments and revived a thousand-year tradition. Using traditional clay, yucca brushes, and ancestral designs, she created the Sikyatki Revival style. She never signed pieces—Hopi art is about memory, not authorship. Honor Nampeyo.
