The Western Wall, also called the Kotel (Hebrew for “wall”), is one of four retaining walls to survive the Roman destruction of the Second Temple in the year 70. The Temple Mount complex was built by the Judean king, Herod the Great, in the first century BCE. Herod’s Temple wasn’t a new structure, but a renovation of the then-nearly 300-year-old second Temple, which Jews — returning from exile in Persia — began working on in 352 BCE. The second Temple, as the name implies, was an attempt to rees
