The branch collar is the enlarged area at the base of a branch where it joins the tree trunk. Behind the collar is the branch bark ridge, which is a raised area. When removing a limb, be careful not to cut flush against the trunk. Instead, make an angled cut, down and away from the trunk to avoid damaging the branch collar and bark ridge.
