Meet the eastern box turtle! 🐢 They can be identified by their domed shell that has blotches of yellow, orange, brown, and black. 🐢 They are terrestrial, meaning they live predominantly on land. 🐢 They are called “box turtles” because they can completely close their lower shells and box themselves in. 🐢 Males have red eyes while females have brown or dark red eyes. 🐢 We think they are stunning, gorgeous, beautiful, and amazing. Have you seen a box turtle digging lately? It’s that time of year! Box turtles dig holes and deposit eggs. They dig with their hind feet, as you can see here. Once they have laid their eggs, they leave them on their own to hatch. These turtles typically lay eggs once a year, and lay only 2 to 8 eggs per clutch.
