Fact Slap 👋 Tonight in 1940, the monitor HMS EREBUS departs from Nore anchorage in the Thames Estuary with the two destroyers HMS WARPOLE & HMS GARTH in escort. EREBUS opened up on the port facilities and fortifications around Calais between 0010 and 0042 on the morning of the 17th of October. Damage to the port and the fortifications is minimal but it keeps the Germans awake and alert that the British are capable of striking back without interference at sea. The Franklin Expedition's two ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, were state-of-the-art vessels retrofitted with steam engines and reinforced hulls for ice navigation.
