F-14 Tomcat The F-14 Tomcat’s first flight occurred in 1970. Grumman (now part of Northrop Grumman Co.) produced 712 Tomcats between 1969-1991. The two-seat, twin-engine, variable sweep wing fighter was built for the U.S. Navy. The F-14 was an incredibly maintenance intensive and considered an unreliable aircraft.
