Following a prolific period of symphonic writing, Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů completed his Three Madrigals in 1947 while recovering from a near-fatal fall. “I have no pains, only the loss of balance,” he wrote to his friend Miloš Šafránek, “but all this uncertainty causes such depression that I can’t write about it.” The piece was written for violinist Joseph Fuchs and his sister, violist Lillian Fuchs.
