On December 26, 1988 “Starrcade '88: True Gritt”, the 6th annual Starrcade pay-per-view produced under the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) banner and the first Starrcade event produced by World Championship Wrestling (WCW), took place from the Norfolk Scope in Norfolk, Virginia. Shortly before the event, Ted Turner bought Jim Crockett Promotions (JCP), and the company became WCW. The main event was an over 30 minute classic bout between “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair (with J. J. On September 7, 1988 NWA Clash of the Champions III: Fall Brawl took place at the Albany Civic Center in Albany, Georgia. In the main event, Sting defeated NWA United States Heavyweight Championship Barry Windham (with J.J. Dillon) by disqualification after Windham hit Sting with a chair. The referee didn't actually see the chairshot but was informed of it by former San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman John Ayers who came to ringside. Fall Brawl would later become a regular PPV event for WCW. |

On December 7, 1988 NWA Clash of the Champions IV: Season’s Beatings took place at the UTC Arena in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This was the first Clash of the Champions following the sale of Jim Crockett Promotions to Turner Broadcasting and the subsequent company name change to World Championship Wrestling. On January 2, 1988 NWA World Championship Wrestling aired on WTBS from the St. Louis Arena in St. Louis, Missouri.
