In 1983, the New York Telephone Company announced that New York City, which had been with a 212 area code since the codes were first introduced in 1947, would be divided into two area codes by mid-1984. Manhattan and the Bronx would retain the 212 code while Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island would be given a new code: 718. The company said the move was necessary because it was running out of numbers, and that with the two codes it could double the number of exchanges. Cal
