MARABOU STORK CHICK UPDATE: At one month old, our marabou stork chicks are now able to stand up fully and walk around their nests. This one, a female, weighed 0.19 pounds at birth and now weighs almost 9 pounds — talk about a major growth spurt! Every year since the 90s, wood storks have laid nests at Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. By 2003, we began partnering with additional organizations, including MyFWC Florida Fish and Wildlife, to band storks to help with identification, determine survival rates, and monitor habitat usage. This year we banded 30 chicks, bringing the total number of birds banded at the Zoo over the past 18 years to 413!
