Auschwitz survivor Primo Levi, born on this day 100 years ago, feared that no one would believe what he had seen. The Italian Jewish chemist took to writing nevertheless, to describe his worst nightmare. Released initially in only 1,400 copies, Levi's autobiographical book, If This Is a Man, is today regarded as one of the most important pieces of literature documenting Nazi atrocities. | World Jewish Congress
