Stoneware plate making is one of those processes that is all about a few simple steps done carefully. After centering the clay on a batt, I use a piece of plastic piping, well-wetted, to press the mound into a clean, even disc. It’s such a satisfying trick because it gives you a consistent base to work from without over-handling the clay. Part 3 of my plate-making process. In Part 1 I threw these plates, and in Part 2 I showed how I released and turned them once they’d dried a little. Here I’m trimming while the plate is still on the bat — the low centre of gravity makes it easy to centre and keeps everything stable. I trim the base, tidy the edge, add my maker’s mark, then flip and do a final smooth and trim before leaving them to dry completely, right side up.
