The Obote Revolution 1966 On May 24th 1966 the first president of Uganda, Sir Edward Mutesa, fled into exile. He fled following an attack on his Palace “Lubiri”, by government forces on the orders of self-imposed President Milton Obote. After a day-long battle, in which the army deployed tanks and heavy artillery, the Kabaka and his defenders’ small arms could not hold the palace against the attacking force.
